This is a thorough enough overview of depression (albeit a bit dated at this point), but it's not nearly as good as A Mood Apart or The Noonday Demon -- I would mainly recommend it to people who don't have the attention span to tackle something more in-depth. The writing's pretty pedestrian and lacks the warmth people like Andrew Solomon and Peter Kramer have brought to the subject. My copy was also missing most of the chapter on antidepressants, so I can't really speak to how well that subject's handled.
