Why do I feel like I was supposed to read something by Joyce Carol Oates? Why is her name totally sticking out to me from some buried "Authors to Read" folder in my subconscious? Anyway, I chose this one randomly for that reason. I read the first story, wasn't terribly impressed, and returned it to the library. Perhaps I'll try again in the future with something that comes more highly recommended.

george i do NOT enjoy joyce carol oates. i wanted to burn We Were The Mulvaney's after i finally finished it. i read Black Girl White Girl (i think that's the title) and liked it much more. i think that was a fluke because i tried something else and thought it was horrible. won't fall into that trap again.

Danielle Thanks, George. I read some other reviews on here after posting mine and it sounds like you would have to be a glutton for emotional punishment to enjoy this one. The writing wasn't bad, though.

Danae Is it because of Jenny Oakes Baker? I also get the feeling that name is supposed to mean something to me...

Danielle Ha. Nope, I don't think that's it. I think LDS musicians are even less on my radar than authors. I wrote that because I wasn't sure she was a praised author, maybe she was just some schmuck whose name stuck out to me for some reason. But nope, it's because she's acclaimed. So, there was some justification for me thinking I should read her. Hooray for Danielle's subconscious. Call me when you get a minute.
