Amber is a modern Pollyanna, turning crabby old ladies into contributing members of society, seeing across color lines and bringing a community together. She is an incorrigible optimist until something happens to crush all of her happiness. And then the community she worked so hard for returns the favor.

I loved Pollyanna as a child, and Amber keeps the love alive. Amber is pretty quirky, but somehow manages to strike a good note and makes me feel for her.
