The author does a wonderful job of blending imagination with science and history. Readers can put themselves in the place of Hanna, the conservationist, who ponders the mysteries of an ancient manuscript, the places it's been, the people who created and handled it. She does all that she can to examine and unravel the book's mysteries and is able to reveal bits and pieces of its history, but she still has so many questions. Unlike Hanna, the reader is able to go back in time and get to know each of the people involved in the book's rich and varied history.
