There's not much to say about this book that has not already been said. One reviewer compared it to the films of Ingmar Berman crossed with The Silence of the Lambs and I think that's a pretty apt description.

The mystery that starts the plot in motion also has definite overtones of Agatha Christie the golden age of detective fiction, a fact commented on by one of the characters. The first half even has a plodding slowness, reminiscent of a bygone era. But make no mistake, this is a modern mystery novel and it picks up steam and speed as it goes. The second half goes by much faster and has elements of the psycho-sexual thriller or even a horror story. Engrossing, but not for the squeamish.
