Victor Davis's Reviews > Deliverance
This is one of those "you've GOT to read the book" books. The movie is so iconic (for the wrong reason, perhaps) that most people probably don't even know it is a book. It's a novel of high adventure, an impossible life-or-death survive-the-jungle plot that by any other novelist would be a piece of trashy genre fiction. But Dickey is a poet, and the language he employs to tug at the emotional strings attached to the story is exceptional.
