Colleen O'Neill Conlan I'm not the first to say this book is ahead of its time. Alcoholism, psychological abuse, adultery, separation, enabling behavior - it's all in there. The themes are quite modern, but happen when women - even women of means - are legally trapped in marriage. Helen can't leave her marriage with the money she brought to her marriage, and can't even leave without it, according to her proud, alcoholic husband. She leaves anyway, under an assumed name and identity. I loved seeing Helen as an artist and "single" woman struggling to do what is right for her son and herself.
