The Just City (Thessaly, #1)
Nov 10, 2015
The only other book of Walton's I read before The Just City was her Hugo winner Among Others, and I had pretty much the same reaction to this book: I've realized that I'd rather have a conversation with the author over a pot of tea than read her fiction. She and I seem to have a lot of the same interests. I feel like I should be more engaged with her writing than I am, and that's a little frustrating. Not that The Just City is a bad novel - It's smart and clever and well composed and lively at times, but it wades around in a pool of its own regard a little too often for my taste, and I never really connected emotionally with its characters. I spent way too much time in college pulling my hair out over Plato's Republic and always wondered what it would be like to see demonstrated the ideal world he envisioned. The Just City is an interesting experiment for anyone who shares that experience, but it didn't quite take off like I wanted it too.
