it was amazing

Uprooted is an amazing fantasy epic inspired by Polish folk mythology. It begins as a sort of fairy tale about an ageless wizard called The Dragon who protects the residents of a valley from an evil corruption of nature known as The Wood. In exchange for his services he takes a young woman from one of the villages to live with him and serve him in his secluded tower for a period of ten years. Agnieszka is the latest tribute to be taken by The Dragon, and she discovers there is more to his motives for taking her than anyone could have known. The story becomes grander and deeper than its simple, straightforward beginning suggests, and is about as unputdownable as any book I've picked up in the last few years.
There are things I could nitpick - a contrivance here, a cheat or two there - but fiction that sustains itself at such a high level is allowed to be imperfect in small doses. An absolute must read for fantasy fans.
