This is the second novel of Jennifer Egan's I've read in the last couple of months, the first being Look at Me, and I'm about to start A Visit from the Goon Squad. Somebody suggested that I read The Keep first, and I'm quite glad I did. Egan's got a very interesting way of structuring her narratives; in both The Keep and Look at Me, she lets you get just far enough in that you're comfortable with how things are proceeding -- aha, realist narrative with dark undertones -- before the hints start piling up that what you're reading isn't at all the whole story. In both novels, there's a moment at which your perspective is suddenly, unexpectedly shifted. I wasn't sure how I felt about that shift in Look at Me, but it works brilliantly in The Keep.
