Original Review @ Naomi’s Reading Palace
I’ve become a fan of Monica Murphy’s writing as of late, so when I saw that she wrote something a little darker, I was excited to get my hands on it. Never Tear Us Apart is not an easy read; it touches on some difficult elements that bought two people together.
The story alternates between Katherine and Ethan, from the past and the present, and was done so in a tasteful matter, that churned all of my emotions.
Katie went through something that every parent dreads and which no child should ever go through. She was one of the lucky ones because she was rescued. But she had struggled ever since, with her family, friends, the public and her own inner demons. It was eye opening, getting her history, understanding what she went through and why she made the connection with her captor’s son, Will.
Ethan (Will) had always wondered what happened to Katie, and after she did an interview on television, he decided to try and track her down to see if her life is better. He managed to find her, and made his way into her life once again, although she didn’t recognise him. I liked seeing him interact with Katie, their connection growing once again, but it annoyed me that he held back so much.
There’s a lot of inner dialogue in this story as the author gets across the details about the characters as well as what they are feeling. Katie’s mother and sister struggle to let her do so much by herself though, constantly checking on her and monitoring her. Ethan’s life wasn’t as easy, either, after everything that happened. They have both built themselves new lives, but feel as though something is missing. It was great to see the change in Katie, becoming stronger and more confident; having a guy in her life had helped her. But Ethan’s secrets kept the distance between them. Never Tear Us Apart ended quite suddenly and now I’m dying to see what happens next for Katie and Ethan; the tease in the back was not enough!
