Another fantasy, this one about a young woman whose death sentence is reprieved when she agrees to act as the food taster for her country's ruler. There was a good amount of intrigue, and I liked the main character. She uses her wits and grit to survive her hopeless situation, where she not only has to escape the remnants of her horrific past but the poison training of the country's number one assassin and any attempts on the Commander whose food she tastes.

I would like fantasy novels with political intrigue, except that most of them are 700 pages long, and really should only be 350. So I especially appreciated the (relatively) short length, which kept the story on point. It was left open-ended, but there are two more books. I'd be grateful if they were as satisfying as this one.
