really liked it

All of Robert Goddard's books--and I have now read all of them--are intricately plotted and well-written. This one moves back and forth between related events in 1940 and 1976 involving a Jewish diamond merchant in Antwerp, an Englishman wrongly imprisoned in Ireland for 36 years, the merchant's granddaughter, and the Englisman's nephew. Add forged Picassos, a main character named Eldritch Swan, and Goddard's marvelous ear for English dialect, and you've got a "thumping good read," which happens to be the name of an award one of Goddard's earlier novels received.
