bookshelves: culture, fiction, science-fiction, robot-cyber

This is the third in the Culture Series of Novels by Iain M. Banks...this is a fascinating series about a galaxy wide civilization known as the Culture which is infused with utilitatian philosophy and sentinent machine life..it is a constantly entertaining meditation on the nature of life, progress and the encounters between different systems of belief and meaning. The Culture, often interferes with others using a gorup known as 'special contact'. This novel is the story of tw special contact agents, one of whom is an expert at war....in addition to the now to be expected brilliantly conceived Culture context, the story of Zakalwe is moving, disturbing and ultimately shocking. The whole book becomes afuge on the nature of violence, force and destiny.
