This historical novel tells the life of a man, Arnau estanyol, which oversaw the construction of the great Cathedral of Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona. The Cathedral of the people, built by the people and for the people. The character's life begins with his parents, and Francesca Bernart estanyol, peasants in a feudal to Barcelona. The mother is compelled to serve the feudal house and separated from her son, the father escapes to Barcelona with Arnau. In the city looking for his sister to help you achieve your freedom and your child. According to city law who live there a year and one day be free. But for Bernart Arnau and that freedom is achieved only with great difficulty. And even after they are considered free by the law of Barcelona, must still endure a series of confrontations and difficulties created by the family. In a setback Bernart is arrested and sentenced to death. Joan Arnau helped by a friend who becomes his adoptive brother, gets separated from the family and living alone vowing revenge for all the humiliations that have shifted and his father. Throughout his life are such problems as famine, pestilence, rage against the Jews, a possessive lover, war, slavery and other problems of the age. With the help of friends who will know and is gaining respect of which passes through several careers since bastaix, the soldier, exchanger, a judge and hero. Arnau make friends among the enemies of their enemies, make friends with Jews, slaves, peasants and people of lower social strata. Enough to be helped by their mother without knowing it.
