Geraldine Brooks came across the true story of the village of Eyam in Derbyshire when she was a middle-east war correspondent and through the next few years of reporting on war-torn devastation of the modern world, she found her imagination returning to this marvellous tale. With her eye for detail and fluid prose, she embarks on a novel based on the reality of this exceptional little town.

The result is a jewel, tantalising the reader with a snippet of life that survived the worst of the ravages, we are then taken back to the heart pounding beginning of the discovery of pestilence and travel with this village through magnificently portrayed landscapes and events.
