it was amazing
bookshelves: fiction, the-lady-is-the-tiger, wicked-games

This one sat on my shelf forever, mainly because someone, and I can't remember who, said it was like art house Fatal Attraction. I guess I see the logic of that statement, but it is a misleading and limited comparison.

Where the movie employed cheap tactics to deliver matinee-priced thrills, this novel uses the sometimes impenetrable logic of emotion to deliver a complex and disturbing story about obsession. What Slavenka Drakulic accomplishes here is psychological archeology--digging through the strata of a character's past to reconstruct the plausibility of a seemingly implausible event.

A taut, elegant book.

Hesper Hey, where did my comment go?

El I don't know, it was there before! The Goodreads Monster apparently got snacky.

Great review, btw. I'm not sure I would have made the jump to Fatal Attraction myself, but I agree with you in that it makes sense - sort of. They're just on completely different levels.

Hesper Thanks. I would have gone with 9 1/2 Weeks, if I had to give it a movie analogy, but even that fails.
