really liked it

Just finished Mortal Coils, this first of what I think is a planned Young Adult fantasy trilogy by Eric S. Nylund.

I liked it quite a bit. It is about two home-schooled and almost criminally isolated twins being raised by their Grandmother and Great Grandmother in Northern California. Their tidy and boring little world begins to unravel upon reaching 15 years of age and coming into contact with the families of their mother and father (presumed dead) who just happen to be gods... or something like it.

It is a dark and morally ambiguous tale, which I like. There is adventure and violence and coming of age struggles and re-spinning of fairy tales. All well done in my view. The siblings learn to depend more on each other than anyone else despite the life-threatening challenges and temptations they face at the hands of their newly found relatives.

There are a few sluggish points in the plot, but overall the book delivers.

Can't wait to read #2. There are no happy endings here.
