Victoria Allman Bich Minh Nguyen captures the feelings and food of a child growing up in the 80's with acute observation. Her references to songs, clothing, tv shows and friendships are highlighted by her descriptions of the food of her childhood...or the longing for the food of the time.

Fleeing Vietnam with her family and trying to fit in to middle America white Michigan is the theme of Stealing Buddha's Dinner, but it has a universal theme that every girl goes through, no matter where they are from; trying to fit in.

Her reverences to American junk food is only overshadowed by the beautifully described Vietnamese food her grandmother lovingly makes for her.

This is a fabulous book for any food lover, 80's child, or person trying to find her place in the family/community/world.

I enjoyed every minute of it and immediately went to the kitchen to make pho upon finishing.
