I see why this is a classic. Masterful characterizations, dialogue and character development. It was hard to get into it, though, since the plot (such as it I'd) is so obvious and you can pretty much predict the ending from page one, but somewhere around the middle when Emma begins to see the error of her ways, I started to like her more and get more interested. Before that, I could see nothing at stake for any of these highly privileged, bored (and boring) people, and the obsession with class (typical of this era and this class!) was a bit more than a modern-day American could stomach. By the end, though, I was identifying with Emma more, and invested in the outcome - so, as a writer, I am very interested in understanding how Jane Austen did this! How she got me to care about this rather unlikeable character with nothing much to do but meddle in other people's lives is something to study and learn from.
