Bankok 8 is a well crafted noir set in an exotic milieu where the city itself is as much a character in the novel as any of the human cast. Krung Thep (Bangkok)is presented in all its seedy glory without feeling either sensationalized or glamourized. I found myself loving the city warts and all. The Buddhist worldview is omnipresent and informs the motives and reactions of each player in the story. The central crime of the novel is extraordinarily perverse but sums up much of West / East interactions. I thoroughly enjoyed they novel but it probably wasn't the best idea to read it just before my daughter leaves for year in Thailand.
