really liked it
bookshelves: read-for-class

Lois Lowry does an exceptional job putting the reader in the midst of a war-torn Denmark, from the inclusion of Danish and German words to the sister's longing for cupcakes demonstrating the most basic of wants being stolen by the Nazis. Historically accurate (love the author's note explaining which elements are fiction and which are real, with most being real) but includes just enough humor to keep the deep subject a little lighter. An intense read, but an excellent introduction to the horrors of World War II.
