it was amazing

I read this ages ago and I'm not sure why the review is missing. This is an excellent story of Chinese immigrants making their way in NY. The struggle between their new country and their old traditions is fragile and present in almost every decision they make. Especially fascinating is the role of mothers and sons and the difficulty in respecting each other's choices.

I also found it interesting to see how a scholar in China can end up an underpaid and unrespected dishwasher in Forest Hills.

Ha Jin is subtle, he leaves the reader to make the point. Truly enjoyable.
