Tolstoy really could have used an editor. The book is at least a third longer than it should be, and would be a better, tighter story if he didn’t go off rambling on generals, war, Napoleon, Kutuzov, life, faith and destiny. The epilogue in particular is unnecessary and 90% of it could be cut without affecting the actual story. But the central story is a good read and worth the effort.
