really liked it
bookshelves: 2011

Technically I'm not sure if I can include this in my 2011 list, because I started reading it last year. But I just finished it last night, so I'm figuring that counts.

Very much enjoyed this read and learning more about the man who heads my "dream dinner party guest" list. Having followed his life and career for a long time, I did already know a lot of the stories in here, so learning about his credit card thievery and jail time wasn't a shock. What I did find shocking were some of his tales of boarding school life -- very different to the stories I read in my mothers "Girls' Own Journals" when I was a child! But it's all written so matter-of-factly that it's only after the fact that you think, "that was really awful".

I have to admit to skipping a few sections where his style got particularly ponderous, but then it is an autobiography and I imagine it's impossible not to be at least a little ponderous when reflection on your own life.
