really liked it
bookshelves: assigned-reading, poetry, immigrant-experience, young-adult-fiction, reviewed

Karma is a moving fictionalization of the horrific 1984 massacre of Sikhs in India, told through verse and from the perspective of a teenage Canadian girl.

Some lines, while tender and emotive, seemed a bit clichéd to me:

Dear Maya,
Life is an illusion.
And as it turns out, so is death.
What is real?
What remains when we all fade away?
Two things: Love. Forgiveness.
Don't forget.

As a whole, though, this is an amazing book in its characterization and its unflinching willingness to explore complex themes. Definitely recommended :)
