I lived in London for two years and never saw the places Boyd described in his book. And thank god for that! The book is set in London's underbelly—an urban body part I hope I never see. The concept of being able to drop completely off the radar of society is a fascinating one. And there are two characters I'll never forget: Mhouse (how disturbing is her relationship with her son?) and Jonjo (the bad-to-the-bone ex-soldier mercenary you can't help empathizing with). It's not something I would have picked up on my own, but a friend from London brought it to me, and I'm glad she did!
