Cross starts back in time when Maria, Cross's wife, was still alive. I thought this was a nice insight into the character. Who killed her and why? Is her murder related to a serial rapist? These are the questions that Alex Cross and Sampson work on answering in this captivating book. The antagonist is called the Butcher, who is applicably named. He is skilled and provides my favorite quote in the book: "There was very little in life that could be the feeling of having confidence in your ability to do a job well." This is such a true statement, but it is so sinister coming from the Butcher. I will certainly be continuing on in the series of the likable and honorable Alex Cross. 4 stars
