really liked it
bookshelves: edci-886, foundations

I believe Ivan Illich IS a social reconstructionist, but it is difficult to "see" how to replace compulsory public education. For one thing, it is an institution of both government and corporations. Too much money has already been invested in infrastructure (buildings, books) and hierarchies of power (school districts, administrators). However, I find in modern American culture some of Illich's ideas: free universities, lifelong learning, adult/continuing education.
