Very enjoyable simple novella - The shephard, Elzéard Bouffier, after having lost daughter and then wife, withdraws to the Alps of Provence (1200/1300 m.a.s.l.)with his sheep. He dedicates himself to re-planting the trees - 10.000 oaks in 3 years .... He then abandons sheep for bees.

His work, over a period of twenty years leads to the re-population of the once desert-like area. Basically, the story of what one very determined and dedicated man can achieve against all odds.

The initial description of the deserted environment reminded me of the description of arid and infertile land given in Luvina by Juan Rulfo in El LLano en LLamas.

Marc, my 16-year-old gave it me to read.
