Amazing history of San Francisco. Settled by Tammany Hall gangs, Australian miners and convicts, prostitutes and every sort of neer-do-well, the blackguards left their boats rotting in the bay and headed for the gold encrusted hills. But they came back to San Francisco to spend their money or lose it at the gambling tables. The city and its politicians were so corrupt that the armed insurrectionists, the Vigilance Committee had to take over the city - twice! - to restore law and order. And I'm only on chapter 3. By the author of the Gangs of New York, truth is always stranger than fiction.
