Slightly late to this party, but have been wanting to read "The Hours" for a while, especially since I taught "Mrs. Dalloway" to a group of completely bewildered undergraduates last semester.

I'm about halfway through "The Hours" and find myself impressed more than I am moved, and I feel like I should be more emotionally affected by this experience than I am. But the accomplishment of "getting" Woolf and weaving together all of the narrative threads is definitely a tour-de-force.

Perhaps the experience will become more emotionally satisfying as I move through the book to the end.

Having now finished the book, I should acknowledge that this is an impressive technical accomplishment, even though it remained emotionally unaffecting, and the overall experience left me feeling as if the novel had come out of a novel factory, where all novelistic components went through rigorous quality control. Perhaps I should just stop reading fiction altogether.
