it was amazing
bookshelves: favorites, russian-romanticism

A Hero of Our Time is one of the best books I've read in a long time. The observations about life, especially the life of the disaffected over-analytical mind, the beautiful descriptions of the Caucasus as a backdrop, all of it adds to more of figuring out the world through prosaic, poetic, literary transcendance. It works. Really well. A lot of the events, though either entrenched in or a parody of romantic lit., are nonetheless interesting, even harrowing.

“In the first place, [his eyes] never laughed when he laughed. Have you ever noticed this peculiarity some people have? It is either the sign of an evil nature or of a profound and lasting sorrow.”
