I read this for Book Riot's 2016 #ReadHarder challenge for the book of essays category. More on that challenge here:

This is the first thing I've read by Rebecca Solnit, leave for smattered blog posts and articles. She has an excellent way with explaining phenomena that I have difficult putting words to, see "mansplaining" and her repeated allusions in this book to the links between "minor" patriarchal slights to larger patterns of oppression and violence against women.

I really enjoyed several of these essays, including the title one, but others, specifically the more academic and criticism-oriented ones, seemed a bit thrown in and not especially engaging or in keeping with the general themes of the rest of the book. Probably worth picking up, but don't be afraid to skip around if you're not feeling it.
