A very literate and moving writing style -- short and to the point, you could read this in one or two sittins -- tempered with an out-of-date viewpoint about how important it is to change these people's lives and put them into the twentieth century. Instead, having been in Peace Corps myself, now on my third year, to me its much more about changing myself to what they do rather than trying to change their lifestyle.

A little Colombian village, removed from everything except for a small, dangerous road -- i hear that and now say Good. Keep it that way, otherwise you lose something special. Because Ive been to small Colombian towns that are several stops along the path to homogenization, standardized, and its sad. But wow, this lady knew how to turn a phrase, to evoke a place and time and good editorial eye.
