This is my second time enjoying the intransigent Scots louts and the feckless British foreman of The Restraint of Beasts. Fence building and three grunting men confined to a squalid caravan are more interesting than might be presumed. I read Mills's The Scheme for Full Employment a few years ago, and enjoyed it thoroughly, but I'm more likely to go back again to the casual manslaughter and the deadpan darkness of this book's narrator before I re-venture into the later novel's crisscrossing of intractable lorries.
