I don't remember the last time I felt so torn about a book. On the one hand, The Little Stranger has an interminably slow pace; a remarkably unlikable narrator; and one of those vague, "it's up to you, reader!" endings that drive me crazy. On the other hand, Waters seems to have a method to her madness, and the slow pace and seemingly detached, clinical narrator create some absolutely marvelous moments of suspense in the last third of the book. People always say, "I couldn't put it down!" -- but LITERALLY, I could not put this book down until I finished ... and then felt very cheated by the vagueness of the ending. Waters is clearly a talented and sophisticated writer, and while I'm eager to read more of her work, I feel slightly let down by this book.
