This is towards the punkier and more affectedly "gritty" of Banks's works, but it's also one of his better ones - the story makes sense, and bumps along without being too episodic or disjointed as some of the Culture novels sometimes are. I don't understand why this novel doesn't get the acclaim and appreciation of Consider Phlebas, Player of Games or Use of Weapons." 1 comment

Michael Do like Ian/Iain Banks? I find him to be someone that I should like for all sorts of reasons but end up finding tedious and overwrought. Despite which I've tried three of his books.

If you do love him, please explain why in an essay of no fewer than 5,000 words. Please devote some time to the place of pretension vis a vis "sense of wonder." And to why the different spellings for his name depending on the genre. Thank you.
