Salsa is a fun bilingual story that can help introduce children to salsa music, instruments, and Puerto Rican culture. I used this story for a volunteer-based bilingual story time program. (I'm a former bilingual children's services library assistant turned community college librarian.) While I adapted some of the story to make it a little shorter and more appropriate for a young audience, I loved introducing the instruments to the kids. We practiced making sounds to drums and the trumpet.

I also really liked that the story showed people of Afro-Caribbean descent. And I loved the family dynamic, which included aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, siblings, as well as a beloved music teacher.

While I included participation into the story, I also played a clip of some salsa music, so that the children could listen to what it sounds like. Doing that was a really cool use of tech in story time.
