Harper Connelly is able to find dead bodies. Struck by lightening when she was a teen, she has developed this sense of finding the dead and experiencing their last moments. She and her brother Tolliver have a business where they are hired by families (usually) to find the bodies of dead people. In this book, she gets involved in the mystery surrounding the murder of the person she was hired to find.

The two main characters are interesting; their difficult and sad childhood is revealed in small bits and helps understand their connection to each oth, their distance from others as well as their modest dreams. Harper is very astute about people and melancholy at the same time. She and her brother (stepbrother, actually) have an interesting relationship that I'm sure will evolve over the series.
