Ptolemy's Gate delivered what I'd hoped for and more following my reading of The Golem's Eye. There is little that I can write that won't give away key plot and character developments, but Stroud crafted a very moving, rich story with complex, not always sympathetic, main characters. It's rather too bad that this is classified as a Young Adult fantasy book because it deserves a broader reading for the issues of free will, responsibility, friendship, equality, and more that it weaves into a dramatic story. I've discovered that The Amulet of Samarkand will be made into a movie and I look forward to seeing the series on the big screen.
