The Metamorphosis begins with a man, Gregor Samsa, who wakes up one day and realizes that he's been transformed into a bug overnight. The story goes on to describe how his family and coworkers react to his transformation.

The Samsas seem to only care about their son because he takes care of them financially, and so, when he turns into a bug, they are completely at a loss as to what to do...for money, not about Gregor. They have to learn how to make a living, and when they find jobs, they are extremely put out and do not want to care for Gregor the way he cared for them.

I really love this odd story. It is short, sweet, and to the point, but yet I found that it offers a unique perspective on ungratefulness and selfishness.
