really liked it
bookshelves: literary-fiction, short-stories

Well, I almost never rate short story collections this high, and I didn't like Marra's novel this much, and I wasn't expecting him to "get" post-Soviet Russia this well. I was wrong. This collection lacks the effortful feel Vital Phenomena had--and it doesn't get suckered in to trying to find too much redemption. Okay, maybe a little. Maybe it's 4.5 stars. The real bump for me came when he went into Kolya's story in the Zhakharov field. I wanted it to end with us imagining that Kolya was possibly the reason for Ruslan's family's death. But no, we were pushed further into it and though I fought it all the way, I was seduced by the "real" story in the end.

Sappy title, and the book could have had a lot more techno in it. :D

So go ahead. Read it if you're hesitating.
