really liked it

81 out of 100 for 2010

This is the second of Lackey's 'Collegium' chronicles, kind of a Valdemarrean pre-history during which the Collegium, the training ground for Heralds (the heroes of most of lackey's fiction) was being founded. It follows the fortune of Mags, a poor orphan plucked from the mines, and his close friends, Bear (an herbalist) and Lena (a bard or musician). It's tempting to call this the 'Valdemarrean Harry Potter) except that Lackey was publishing novels featuring young friends in the Collegium ten years before Joanna Rowling first introduced Harry Potter to the world.

It's a good, tight story . . . each novel in this series has a plot specific to the novel--Mags being ostracized for being foreign born, then saving the king from an assassination attmempt--as well as a longer tale that runs through several novels--Mags search for his family and for his own identity.

Good read for anyone who likes heroic fantasy; A must for Lackey fans.
