really liked it
bookshelves: committee, journeys, survival, great-for-kids

I thought this book gained momentum as it went along. I liked the main character and the supporting characters, especially the adults: Starr's parents and Charley and Rita.

It was a journey, which kids nearly always enjoy. And I would think that Sunny's feeling of being unwanted/unloved is something kids could sympathize with, if not relate to. Sunny is an easy character to root for.

Even though this book has the exciting cover and makes a big deal about the tornado in description, it is more about learning the grass isn't always greener on the other side. The tornado is a minor subplot in the story.

On the negative side: It was, at times, to me a little preachy.
