Listed as a YA book, this adventure/suspense novel features 14yo Troy Brennan, niece of Temperance Brennan, renowned forensic anthropologist. For those who have read the Temperance novels, the writing is the same but lacking “adult” themes but in no other way different. Troy lives in one of the small islands just off Charleston South Carolina with her father, a researcher at a University run center on a neighboring island. They live in a converted military fort along with several other families. Tory and 3 neighbor boys hang out together since their island home has them isolated from the mainland and Charleston proper where they are “the island kids” in a posh private school they attend. She is a bright girl and not interested in the “social” life that most of the students live, rather she and her friends enjoy studying and learning. They spend lots of free time exploring the nearby islands and when one day Troy rescues a puppy from a small family of wild dogs that has fallen in to an abandoned well, their adventure begins. Murder, secret experiments, discovered dog tags and finding and freeing the puppy lead them in to a round of sleuthing and confrontation with the authorities and the killers. You will have to do your own sleuthing and find out what happens by reading this book which should be no disappointment to adult readers.
