Familiar cast of characters and Scottish Highlands locations provided a level of reading comfort to step into once again. Lochdubh villagers with attitudes I recognized as well as Highland towns, hamlets, and weather effectively describe the settings.

A Canadian focus on suspects and antagonists added an element of surprise, bringing the story to home turf; always a point that adds reading interest. The action scenes were well written to be easily followed.

Hamish seemed more aggressive and less likeable, to me, than previously in the series. His confused relationships with the females in his life appear to remain unchanged.
