really liked it

I really like Doctorow’s ability to call up time and place, especially when it’s Depression era New York. (World’s Fair was even better at this since it included a lot of personal reflections.) Billy was Dutch Schultz’s young protégé, or was that “prodigy” as Dutch said by mistake? No matter the label, Billy had way more depth than any run-of-the-mill gangster.
