Michael Phelps AUTHOR WAYNE ZURL in 'FROM NEW YORK TO THE SMOKIES' has provided his fans with the 'Back-Story' of SAM JENKINS. We meet SAM as a 17 year old High School Senior. As the result of his father's labor union activities, SAM meets a couple of Detectives on Long Island, NY. Now we know how SAM's interest in Law Enforcement began. SAM enlists in the U. S. Army, where he advances to the rank of Captain, and saw combat in Viet Nam. Upon his return, he joins the Suffolk County (NY) Police Department, where he advances to the rank of Lieutenant, commanding the Major Case Squad for the last 13 years of his twenty years on the department. Upon retiring, he and his lovely and devoted wife relocate to Prospect, TN, the foothills of the Smokie Mountains. SAM looks forward to a life of relaxation with fishing and hunting being his primary focus. His wife is looking forward to peace and quiet, with SAM by her side and the constant worries of a Cop's wife . . . "will he come home after his shift?" finally over. Well, his retirement is short lived. The Prospect Police Department erupts in a scandal, the Chief is fired. The City Council likes the idea of having a 'Big New York County' Detective as the new chief. SAM likes the idea too . . . old saying; 'Once a Cop . . . always a Cop'. After all, a small town in the foothills of the Smokies . . . the most serious crime would be a moonshine operation, right? WRONG!

I have read almost eveyone of AUTHOR WAYNE ZURL'S "SAM JENKINS" novels, and this one is simply FANTASTIC! I got to really know SAM JENKINS, as he matured, served his country, married his high school sweetheart, served and protected his community, retired and un-retired. Among Police Officers, divorce, alcoholism and suicide are high risks. SAM was forunate to have beat thoise odds, largely thanks to his devoted wife. I have watched CHIEF SAM JENKINS evolve into being the epitome of "A Cop's Cop". In 'FROM NEW YORK TO THE SMOKIES' we are held in suspense as SAM works on solving several cases . . . all involving brutal murders! THIS novel is a MUST READ for those who enjoy REAL detective/police procedural novels. Personally, I have the gut instinct that SAM JENKINS is really modeled after AUTHOR WAYNE ZURL . . . and his life as a Police Officer/Detective. He also reminds me of 'FRANK REGAN, Commissioner of NYPD' on 'Blue Bloods'. FIVE STARS and more! I would love to see CHIEF SAM JENKINS come to life . . . could sure match Actor TOM SELLEK'S "Chief Jesse Stone" of 'Paradise, Maine PD'.
