The novel is about the life and adventures of a young army officer Pyotr Grinyov during the Pugachev's Rebellion in 1773-1774. Pushkin has stated the plot come to him as a result of long work with the primary sources of Pugachev's Rebellion and his historical study of peasant’s rebellions.

The story opens with its protagonist, Pyotr (turned 17) is sent into military service in Orenburg by his father who is retired army officer. He is later helped by a mysterious man when he lost his way in a blizzard in heath. This man is later revealed to be Yemelyan Pugachev.
He begins his service under Captain Ivan Mironov and falls in love with his daughter Masha...
